How to import .zip files into Minecraft Bedrock Edition!

A Full Guide to importing Packs, Addons, Worlds, and Templates.

Importing free add-ons, Packs, Worlds, or templates may seem complicated, as some files can be in .zip format or require additional steps compared to those found on the Minecraft Marketplace. However, with the correct steps and files app, you can successfully import files, especially Zip files, into Minecraft Bedrock Edition (or MCPE).

This article will explain how to properly import .zip files into Minecraft Bedrock, what to watch out for, and the best ways that will 100% guarantee successful Imports.

  1. Choose the correct file app

First, you will need an unzip app or a file explorer, because most default file apps that are pre-installed on your device may not recognise .mc files.

For Android, I highly recommend CX File Explorer, and for iOS, I recommend Documents File Manager by Reddle.

Now that you have your file explorer ready, open it and look for the zip file. You can sort by the latest download for easy access.

  1. How to import packs (i.e., resource, texture, skin packs, or vibrant visuals, shaders)

Step 1

Look for the .zip file, long-press on it,

Step 2

Click “rename,” Remove the .zip, and add “.mcpack” if it isn't there.

Then click on ok or Done.

Step 3

Tap on the new .mcpack file and click Minecraft.

Step 4 (optional)

Add the packs to the global resources to get the full effects, which means it will work on servers, realms and multiplayer worlds. However, the pack will only be visible to you, unless it's also active in the world, server or realm.

These packs can be added to worlds individually and to realms you create (except skin packs).

  1. Addons and Scripts

Step 1

Just like earlier, long-press on the zip file.

Step 2!

Click “rename,” Remove the .zip and add “.mcaddon” if it isn't there. Then click on ok/Done.

Step 3

Tap on the file and click Minecraft.

If the addon/script fails to import using .mcaddon try “.mcpack” instead.

If the addon or script has a behaviour and a resource pack, make sure both of them are activated in the world, realm, or server. Sometimes the other one will activate on its own, as shown in the video below.

Check the website from which you downloaded the Addon/Script, to see if it requires any experiments like beta APIs, or others.

If the addon/script fails to import check out these reasons why and how to fix here: How to fix addons fail to import into Minecraft Bedrock Edition (coming soon)

  1. Worlds and Templates

Step 1

Long-press on the zip file.

Step 2

Click “rename” and add ".mcworld” if it's a Minecraft world, or ".mctemplate" if it's a template.

Step 3

Click ok/Done, tap on the file and click Minecraft.

Note well: Most maps are usually .mcworld, however, some can be templates. Try the .mctemplate if .mcworld doesn't work. Normally, the website you got the world/template (map) usually states what it is, so check there first.

If none of the file extensions work, the world may have a file inside the zip file.

To fix this,

Step 1

Extract the zip file, click “extract to”

Create a new folder, give it any name, preferably the name of the world/template.

Step 3

If you see one folder, open it, and select all the files. If there is no folder just select all of the files that are there.

Step 4

Tap the 3 dots in the corner and compress them. Once that's done, click rename and add “.mcworld” or (“.mctemplate” if it's a template).

Step 5

Tap ok/Done, then tap the file to open it in Minecraft.

       5. Why the file may fail to import

Definitely make sure that the zip files are for Minecraft Bedrock Edition, because zip files for Java Edition aren't going to import into Minecraft Bedrock or MCPE.
